Position Description

This interim position has been filled; however, the position will be reopened for a permanent superintendent in October 2010.

Port Townsend is a great place to live, work, raise a family and enjoy numerous recreational activities. The community is very supportive of the Port Townsend School District providing enriching activities through Centrum, the Northwest Maritime Center and Wooden Boat Foundation, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the YMCA, Jefferson County Parks and Recreation,
PTA, the Port Townsend Education Foundation, and various other youth oriented activities and clubs.

The community and surrounding region offer a wide range of recreation and cultural opportunities, including a swimming pool, three golf courses, tennis courts, hiking trails and over ten acres of public parks. More than seventy five events are sponsored annually by Centrum and other local organizations, including jazz festivals, historic home tours, dinner theaters, craft fairs, sailing regattas, summer youth symposium, a writers’ conference, and a film festival.


Position Challenges

The Port Townsend Board of Directors has identified the following leadership opportunities attendant to the position:
• Provide visionary leadership with the ability to look toward the future, anticipate the needs of the district and put people and programs in place to address those needs.
• Provide collaborative leadership to the staff and
community in addressing the educational needs of students in the district through a well-rounded program that balance academics, athletics, activities and the arts.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the wide range of stakeholders that impact Port Townsend schools.
• Continue to support and expand co-operation with various organizations such as Centrum, Northwest Maritime Center, Wooden Boat Foundation, and others.
• Work openly and effectively with the Board of Directors, maintaining an open-door policy.
• Expand co-operation with neighboring districts seeking collaboration and mutually beneficial partnering.


Position Requirements

The Board of Directors is seeking candidates with the following qualities and characteristics:
• Committed to community leadership and active
involvement, with the willingness to live in the Port Townsend School District community.
• Innovative and action oriented. Ability to delegate. Good communicator and skilled negotiator.
• Someone who helps partner with the community in a shared approach to education.
• Someone who will support education as a human and
cultural experience as well as an intellectual one.
• Someone who helps set and achieves exceptional standards in preparation for a future that is yet unknown.
• Someone who will support life long learning.
