Title: |
Superintendent - Puyallup School District |
| Description: |
Puyallup is located in the heart of the scenic south Puget Sound region of western Washington, just 30 miles south of Seattle and 10 miles east of Tacoma, nestled at the base of the majestic Mount Rainier. Affordable housing, close proximity to military bases, and a variety of outdoor recreational activities have made this a thriving community and an ideal location for families.
The Puyallup School District is the ninth largest district in Washington, covering approximately 55 square miles and serving a population of 119,000 residents. Puyallup schools serve more than 20,500 students in 21 elementary schools, seven junior high schools, three comprehensive high schools, and the Walker campus, which offers program options for students in grades 9-12. The Puyallup Online Academy is in its third year and serves more than 170 students.
The district cultivates strong community partnerships that support quality educational programs, with more than 4,500 trained volunteers who assist throughout the district and help to foster a learning environment that supports physical, emotional, social, and intellectual safety. Parents are encouraged to be active partners in the educational process.
Puyallup School District students outperformed the state average in nearly every grade level and, in some cases, set record highs in the 2011 state assessments making especially strong gains in math and science. Noteworthy student achievements include:
The highest percentage ever of students in grades four through eight met or exceeded the state's math standard.
The highest percentage ever of students in grades five, eight, and 10 met the state's science standard.
The highest percentage ever of fourth graders met the writing standard.
The highest percentage ever of sixth graders met the reading standard.
Three schools were among only 35 statewide that earned their way off the "needs improvement" list for making academic progress as required by the federal No Child Left Behind law.
Nearly 99 percent of twelfth graders in the Class of 2011 met or exceeded state standards on reading and writing assessments.
Three junior highs and three elementary schools earned state "School of Distinction" status for being among the top 5 percent of schools statewide that demonstrated improvement in reading and math over the past five years. Puyallup ties with Seattle for having the most schools from one district to receive the award.
Other events and accomplishments of which we are particularly proud include:
77 African-American students earned Elizabeth Wesley Youth Merit Incentive Awards, a record for the district.
The district has received nine consecutive "clean" audits from the State Auditor's Office.
557 students are entered in the College Bound Scholarship Program and may be eligible to receive tuition credits from colleges and universities upon graduation.
The board of directors has been named a "Board of Distinction" by the Washington State School Directors' Association for three consecutive years.
