The Selah Community The Selah Community
At first glimpse, travelers descending Umptanum Ridge on Interstate 82 are immediately captured by the sight of the Yakima Valley lying in the distance. Dropping down from the Ridge, the community that comes into view is Selah, a town which is spread across the top of the small hills overlooking Yakima--Central Washington’s largest town.
The Selah community has evolved around the fruit industry, however, tourism is rapidly becoming an evolving part of our community. Signs of agriculture in the community are evident in both the orchards and fruit processing businesses which embrace the town. Selah is an appealing community that is home to families who enjoy the quality of life in a small town, but work in the Yakima business district.
The town of Selah is a stone’s throw from one of Washington’s most spectacular wilderness regions. Lying near the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Selah offers residents easy access to hunting, fishing, skiing, hiking, boating, and other outdoor recreational pursuits.
Adjoining Selah is Washington’s seventh largest city--Yakima. Yakima boasts a community college, two professional sports teams, two major hospitals, an arts council, symphony orchestra, daily newspaper, local television and radio stations, and numerous shopping and entertainment outlets. Over the hill from Selah to the north is Ellensburg and Central Washington University. In addition, Selah is conveniently located an almost equal distance from Spokane, Seattle, and Portland.
The Selah School District serves more than 3,500 students and is comprised of six schools which operate out of five buildings. The District supports two elementary schools which serve students in grades preschool through fourth, an intermediate school which houses fifth, sixth and seventh graders, a junior high school for students in eighth and ninth grades and a high school which serves students in tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. Additionally, as part of Selah High School, an alternative school, Selah Academy, is included and services students in grades 8-12.
