ABOUT NORTHWEST LEADERSHIP ASSOCIATES

Dr. Dennis Ray is currently in his seventh year as Director of Washington State University’s Leaders for Tomorrow’s Schools program. This is the largest superintendent preparation program in the Northwest and one of the largest in the nation. The Leaders for Tomorrow’s Schools program was created through grants from the Boeing Company and Washington Mutual Savings Bank to develop new models for the development of future educational leaders.

Dennis’ experience includes service as superintendent of the Northshore School District for four years and the Walla Walla School District for ten years. He was Washington State’s Superintendent of the Year in 1987, and the state’s nominee for National Superintendent of the Year in 1990.

Dr. John Fotheringham is currently a private consultant conducting management reviews, fiscal studies and superintendent searches for Northwest schools districts. From 1991 to 1997, he was the Executive Director of the Washington Association of School Administrators; he was the Associate Executive Director for five years prior to that. Before joining WASA, John spent many years as an administrator in the Highline School District and 13 years as the superintendent of the Tukwila District.

As a result of his extensive experience in state and national professional associations, John has developed an effective network within the Association of State Executive Directors, composed of the Executive Directors of all of the state associations for school administrators. This network is an invaluable tool in national recruitment and in gathering accurate data regarding the true qualifications of candidates from other states.

Mr. George Murdock is currently in his fifth year as superintendent of the Umatilla-Morrow Educational Service District in Pendleton, Oregon. Prior to assuming the Umatilla-Morrow ESD position, he was superintendent in Pasco, Washington for six years. In 1997, he was Washington’s Superintendent of the Year.

George’s experience also includes service as deputy superintendent of schools in Walla Walla, Washington for eleven years. He served as president of the Washington School Personnel Association and as one of six national directors of the American Association of School Personnel Administrators. He also works with school districts in both Oregon and Washington as a consultant in the areas of personnel, community relations, and organizational management.

Dr. Howard Coble has been assisting school districts with superintendent searches as a private consultant for the past nine years. From 1981 to 1991 he was the Executive Director of the Washington Association of School Administrators, and prior to that time was superintendent of the Olympia School District for ten years and the Snohomish School District for six years.

Howard has conducted superintendent searches in recent years for the Raymond, Hoquim, Pioneer, Rochester, Tenino, Hood Canel, Chewelah, Clover Park, Richland, Bethel. Tumwater and Port Angeles school districts. This work gives him an intimate knowledge of the candidate pool.

Dr. James Howard currently coordinates Washington State University’s field-based principal’s certification program. Prior to joining WSU, Jim served as superintendent of the Davenport School District for four years. He also has had extensive experience as a teacher, principal, and central office administrator in the Walla Walla, Central Kitsap and West Valley school Districts.

In recent years, Jim has assisted with superintendent searches in Chewelah, Sprague-Lamont, Brewster and Creston School Districts. Jim has conducted board-administrative team workshop, strategic planning, principal searches and superintendent searches for numerous school districts throughout eastern Washington.

Dr. Gene Sharratt is currently a member of the Washington State University educational leadership faculty working intensively with the preparation of future school principals and district superintendents. He is also a highly sought speaker and consultant working with school districts on leadership development and the improvement of student learning.

Gene’s prior experience includes serving for 12 years as superintendent of the North Central Educational Service District in Wenatchee and 3 years as superintendent of the Chehalis School District in Southwest Washington. He was also a high school teacher, principal and assistant superintendent in the Yelm School District. In 1988, he was named the National Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Educational Office Personnel.
